Every three years, the FAA asks airports to pull out all the stops and hold a full-scale emergency training exercise to test critical first responders. Last year’s simulation, involving federal and local law enforcement, airline and airport personnel and others, was a major success.

More than 140 volunteers, most pretending to be injured passengers, joined more than a dozen agencies in the scenario, which involved a simulated vehicle bomb explosion that damaged an aircraft and adjoining gate area while passengers were boarding.  Various airlines and local hospitals also took part.

Although the smoke was fake and the injuries were just theatrical make-up, the lessons learned from the exercise were very real and will help in preparing SAN for future emergencies, should they occur.
